There is only one reason I keep coming back to Ginza and that is because the sushi is real good. Ginza is one of the few places in Chicago that actually has a traditional sushi chef. The chef puts the right amount of wasabi on the sushi so you don't even need to add wasabi to the soy sauce. He does a great job with his maki creations. The roll with salmon w/ crispy skin is spectacular. I only come here for sushi or maki. I don't recommend this place if you want to just try other Japanese dishes.

Ginza provides one of the worst service a Japanese restaurant can provide. Perhaps my expectations come from living in the US, but in my experience, Japanese restaurants define phenomenal service. As a Japanese restaurant, Ginza has horrible service. For a downtown restaurant, Ginza has bad service. This is only tolerable since the food is so good. You can count the amount of times you will see your waitress on one hand. If you need anything, you have to make an effort to flag the staff down. On top of that, you will wait a long time for your food. I recommend ordering an appetizer if you are hungry. My appetizers have always taken at least 15 mins to arrive. It is not uncommon to receive it 40 minutes after ordering. My sushi dinners will typically arrive an hour later. Time is not correlated to how busy the restaurant is. I remember my order taking an hour long when I was one of three patrons (the other two groups were already eating). If you go to Ginza, just tell the waitress you are in a hurry. I think you will get the food 5 minutes quicker.

The restaurant itself is nothing to brag about. Ginza is more one of those hole in the walls that have amazing food. Ginza has a back room section where you eat in a more traditional style seated on the floor. This is the best location to be in. Just ask to be seated there. The main dining area permits smoking so if you can't tolerate it, go to the back room. Eating at the sushi bar is not entertaining here since the chef will probably put you to sleep.

To sum up, Ginza has good sushi. There is nothing else great about this place. If you are in a hurry to eat, stay away from this place. However, if you want to have a long sushi dinner in Chicago, Ginza is your place.
